Historical Borst House, The Schoolhouse

Today is our final day here together on the former Borst land.
The last part we have to see is the replica of the one room
schoolhouse.

Let's wander back through the garden and make our way to
the school.

Centralia's replica of a one room schoolhouse was sponsored
by the Lewis County Retired Teacher's Association and the
Centralia Parks and Recreation Department. It was built
with money made from various donations. The schoolhouse
was dedicated on September 16,1996. This building was
created as a replica of the late 1800's one room schoolhouses
of Lewis County, but is a compilation of the features of
several schools and many of the donated items once
belonged to other schoolhouses in Lewis County.

By 1854, there were 3 schools located in the area, one at
Boisfort, one at Claquato, and one most likely near the Cowlitz
landing.

Children from the age of 5 through 13 attended school and
if they were short on space, students would have to share a
desk.

Many times book were also shared.

The view from the teacher's desk.

The "big" boys would have to bring in the wood from outside
to feed the stove in the cold months.

...and so ends our tour. I was so pleased to be able to share
this with all of you. I was just so delighted to discover it back
in June and fell a little bit in love with this special place. It
is such a peaceful and warm home and the gardens done by
the Master Gardeners are magnificent. Thank you for taking
the journey with me and lasting through my endless
amounts of pictures! I hope you enjoyed the trip back through
time and have yourselves a loveleigh weekend!

I think it would be so interesting to actually have gone to school back than. I've always wished I could have lived back in the olden days, with horses drawn buggies!

What a neat old school. It's great that they are preserving or reconstructing what was such an important part of our history.

It's kind of like the Little House on the Prairie school house. I love it!

Wouldn't it be so hard for the teacher to manage not only a lot of students but of varying ages! The adjustment and the patience - I admire teachers of today but I think all the more to those back then.

I've enjoyed all posts about the Borst family. The story, the picture, the tour you gave us - all of it. It truly is amazing to see a house/home built over a hundred of years and still there with original pieces/decors.

I think I've caught interest in your post first back when you posted a picture of the grave of their children. Oh those little ones.

What are those ropes I see on the pictures?

The school house is fun and quite complete, right down to the school books. You have done a wonderful post on these historic sites.

What a precious little steeple-school, Sares! :) This brings back my memories of Little Women! :) Do you like that story? Have you seen the movie? :) I like the TCM version of it. :)
